Lagotto Bird Dogs are the most ancient and original water retriever that all the other water retrievers descended from. Lagotto is a Venetian/Romagnan dialect word meaning “duck dog”. For centuries these birddogs helped their peasant masters hunt waterbirds. After the vast marshlands of Romagna in north-eastern Italy were drained the vast flocks of waterbirds left.
However, over centuries, these dogs have proven to be excellent bird hunting dogs, and their popularity has only continued to grow since 1993 where they almost had gone extinct twice. We are quality trusted PRESERVATION breeders protecting this breed.
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium-sized dog male (17-19 inches, 29-35 lbs) female 14-16 inches, 24-31lbs for breed standard. Some hunters want slightly larger size bred dogs. The birddogs are known for curly coat that repels water so freezing water and snow doesn’t touch their skin, and their extremely keen sense of smell. They are very intelligent and trainable, and can wait patiently for your command to flush out, field and

They have a very strong desire to PLEASE their owners, which makes them a perfect partner for any bird hunter.
These birddogs are known for their stamina and endurance. They are able to run for long periods of time without getting tired, which is essential for small game and bird hunting. They also have a strong prey drive, which means that they will not give up easily when hunting.
Another reason why Lagotto Romagnolos are excellent bird hunting dogs is their versatility. Genetically Lagotto dogs are not affected by high altitude and they are not big eaters. Genetically they do NOT tend to overeat like many labs.

Unlike other bird dogs they have” human eyes” which makes it easier for the hunter to communicate in the darkness. Of course they are great when trained with hand signals and other signaling devices. But those loving “human” eyes and beautiful faces are amazing.
